Can I use a 60 watt bulb instead of a UV light for my turtles?

I was going to buy a UV light for my turtles. But my friend said that I can use a simple light bulb. So will a 60 watt bulb? Or a different watt bulb can work?

No, you can’t. Your turtles need unfiltered UVA/UVB light to produce vitamin D3. That vitamin is necessary to the turtle can process calcium for healthy shell growth. Not having access to uva/uvb lighting will give your turtle soft shell and diseases. Putting your tank in front of a window will not work either because glass, window screens, and water filter out the uvb rays from the light spectrum.

Florescent fish aquarium lighting *might* provide him with uva rays, but does not contain the necessary uvb rays that are very important to turtle growth and also will not provide him with heat. You can find a uva/uvb reptile basking bulb at walmart or your local pet store. They usually run between $5 and $10. Just make sure the packaging on the bulb says uva AND uvb.
