Metals: A Brief Overview of Aluminium Oxide
Metals are one of the most important materials known to humans. With it, people are able to construct more durable and efficient tools, making life easier for everyone. Metal has also paved the way to the creation of taller, larger structures that were once considered impossible to construct. Metals are also crucial to the development of machines that we now consider as a staple of daily living, such as cars, stoves, and electrical wires.
One of the most common metals we use today is aluminium. Although it is the third most abundant element found on Earth’s surface, it was only during the late 19th century that it was used similarly as other existing metals. This metal was hard to extract, thus, it was more precious than gold back in the day. After a few decades, a cheaper way to produce aluminium was developed, allowing the mass production of the metal.
As an attempt to create better materials, aluminium was subjected to a process known as alloying, just like other metals before it. Different metals yielded different aluminium alloys, each with a different characteristic. One of the most popular alloys developed is aluminium bronze, a combination of aluminium and copper.
Aluminium bronze
is known for its amazing durability and resistance against corrosion. Compared to other kinds of bronze alloys, the combination of aluminium and copper results in extremely low corrosion and oxidation rates, even at high temperatures. This characteristic is further improved with the addition of tin, making it even more resistant to corrosion.
Aside from its high resistance to corrosion, aluminium bronze is one of the most commonly used
aluminium alloys
because of its biostatic effects. Because of the presence of copper, algae, barnacles, and other organisms do not develop on its surface. Thus, the alloy is ideal for use in areas where colonization of such organisms is unwanted.
Aside from use in marine installations,
aluminium bronze
is commonly used in building water supply facilities, tools used in oil and petrol industries, and for retrofitting purposes in buildings which are prone to corrosion. The alloy is also commonly used as replacement for gold for casting dental crowns, since they are more durable, cheaper, and just as lustrous.
